Philtrum Length and Lip Proportions: What Is Ideal?

What the philtrum is, how long it usually is compared to the rest of your face, the lip ratio studies rate most attractive and how to measure yours.

The philtrum is the vertical groove between the base of your nose and your upper lip. In balanced proportions, the distance from the base of the nose to where your lips meet is about one-third of your lower face, and the lips-to-chin distance the other two-thirds — a 1 : 2 split. For the lips themselves, a lower lip that is fuller than the upper one looks most natural: in a 2017 study, lips with roughly a 1 : 2 upper-to-lower lip ratio were rated most attractive.

Below: what counts as a short or long philtrum, the main lip ratios, how to measure yours from a photo and what can — and can't — change them.

What is the philtrum?

The philtrum is the small dip in the middle of your upper lip area, framed by two vertical ridges (the philtral columns) that run from the nose down to the peaks of your Cupid's bow. When people talk about "philtrum length", they usually mean the whole upper lip height: from the base of the nose (subnasale) to the point where the lips meet (stomion).

The key lip and philtrum ratios

Ratio How it's measured Common "ideal" guide
Lower third split Nose base → lips meet vs. lips meet → bottom of chin ≈ 1 : 2
Upper : lower lip Height of the red part of the upper lip vs. the lower lip About 1 : 1.6 to 1 : 2
Mouth : nose width Mouth corner to corner ÷ width of the nose ≈ 1.5–1.6
Philtrum : upper lip Skin part of the upper lip vs. its red part Skin part clearly taller

These come from classical proportion guides and modern attractiveness research. They describe averages, not targets — faces that are widely seen as attractive often sit a little outside them.

Short vs long philtrum

Philtrum How it looks Notes
Short Upper lip close to the nose; more upper lip and teeth show Often reads as youthful
Average Upper third of the lower face is about half the lips-to-chin distance Balanced lower face
Long More space between nose and lips; less upper lip shows Often reads as more mature

The upper lip tends to lengthen slowly with age as tissue loses volume and elasticity, which is one reason a shorter philtrum is linked with a younger look. A long philtrum isn't a flaw, though — it's very common, and it can look striking with strong lips or a defined chin.

What lip ratio is most attractive?

In a 2017 study by Popenko and colleagues, people rated digitally altered lips and preferred an upper-to-lower lip ratio of about 1 : 2 — a lower lip roughly twice as tall as the upper lip. Natural lips are often closer to 1 : 1.6, which also looks balanced. Lips where the upper lip is taller than the lower one tended to be rated lower.

The same study found that lips taking up about 10% of the lower third of the face looked best — so "bigger" isn't automatically better. Proportion to the rest of the face matters more than size alone.

How to measure your philtrum and lips

You need a straight-on photo with a neutral expression, lips relaxed and closed, taken at eye level.

  1. Lower third split: measure from the base of your nose to where your lips meet, then from there to the bottom of your chin. Divide the second by the first — about 2 means a classic 1 : 2 split.
  2. Lip ratio: measure the height of the red part of your upper lip and of your lower lip at the center. Divide lower by upper — 1.6 to 2 is the common range.
  3. Mouth width: measure your mouth from corner to corner and compare it with your nose width.

Can you change your philtrum or lip ratio?

Some of it, and with different levels of commitment:

  • Makeup: lip liner traced just on or slightly over the natural border of the upper lip makes it look fuller and the philtrum look shorter. A darker shade on the lower lip and a lighter, glossy one on the upper does the opposite. It's temporary and risk-free.
  • Lip fillers: add volume to the red part of the lips and can rebalance the upper-to-lower ratio. They don't shorten the philtrum itself, and overfilling the upper lip often makes proportions worse.
  • Lip flip: small neuromodulator injections that let the upper lip roll out slightly, showing more of it. Subtle and temporary.
  • Lip lift: a surgical procedure that removes a strip of skin under the nose to shorten the philtrum. It's permanent and leaves a small scar, so it's a decision for a board-certified surgeon consultation, not a trend.

Grooming helps too: a well-shaped mustache or beard changes how much of the upper lip shows for men — see beard styles for your face shape.

Philtrum, lips and facial harmony

Your philtrum and lips are read together with your nose, chin and jaw. A slightly long philtrum with a strong chin and balanced facial harmony usually looks better than "perfect" lip ratios in a face that is out of proportion elsewhere. FAQ

What is a normal philtrum length?

There's no single number, because it depends on your face size. The common guide is proportional: the distance from the base of your nose to where your lips meet is about one-third of your lower face, with the lips-to-chin distance making up the other two-thirds.

Is a short philtrum attractive?

A shorter philtrum is often seen as youthful and attractive, because it shows more of the upper lip. Very short philtrums can look less balanced, so proportion to the rest of the lower face matters more than length alone.

What is the ideal lip ratio?

In one study, an upper-to-lower lip ratio of about 1 : 2 was rated most attractive, and many natural lips are close to 1 : 1.6. In both cases the lower lip is fuller than the upper lip.

Does the philtrum get longer with age?

Yes, the upper lip tends to lengthen slowly with age as skin and tissue lose volume and elasticity. That usually shows less of the upper lip and teeth over time.

Can fillers shorten a long philtrum?

No. Fillers add volume to the lips and can make the upper lip look fuller, but they don't shorten the skin between the nose and the lip. Only a surgical lip lift changes the philtrum length itself.
